Handmade Scandinavian Design Pops-Up in Amsterdam

Posted by: Carmel , 2 juli, 2014

A new -pop-up store called Copenhagen First opened its doors in Amsterdam in June dedicated to handmade Scandinavian design. You might guess from its name that Danish design features highly, but you can also find treats and mouth-wateringly cool products from some of the other Scandi countries too.

CPHfirst-1The shop, which opened its doors on 20 June, is located on the first floor above the Lomography Gallery Store in the 9 Streets. The brainchild behind this venture is Vera Verkooijen, a design-savvy Dutchie who moved to Denmark a year ago and now wants to share some of her favourite discoveries from the streets of Copenhagen back home. She comments, ‘The idea came about because my friend who owns the Lomography store had a vacant first floor space, which got me to thinking!” So together with Madri van Veldhuizen, a plan was hatched.

The collaborative venture currently features the products of 15 designers in-store, CPHfirst-4all handcrafted beautifully in the Scandi style that we all know and love. Amidst the Danish products are also the Nordic wood products of Morten Høegh’s Swedish brand Sløjd, as well as the Danish/Swedish venture Skandinavisk – which features the beautiful ceramic products that have a fika vibe (see the lovely film below).

It is not only the design products that are showcased in-store, sometimes the designers themselves will be present. There was one day in the opening month that Kamilla Rasmussen was in the shop, creating her colourful, bespoke bow-ties for customers. To find out more, just turn up and follow the signs. The shop will be open until 20 July at least, and maybe even longer if we show our appreciation for the great products on sale. Let’s spread the word! 🙂

The 15 brands include:
Casalinga (ceramics)
CPHfirst-2Droobski (lampshades)
Fragment Jewellery (accessories)
Grundled (accessories)
Hamide (illustrations/stationary)
Kamilla Rasmussen (accessories)
Lakrids (liquorice)
Lykke Bang (textiles/home accessories)
Malling-Living (home furnishings)
Nunabee (wood products)
Oak Magazine (publication)
Skandinavisk (ceramics)
Sløjd (wood products)
Stine Gorell (knitted products)
The Organic Company (home accessories).
