Ze doken al eerder op in mijn hoogtepunten top tien van by:Larm 2014: het Noors/Britse Shy for Shore. Melodische electropop dat niet alleen geïnspireerd is door de jaren tachtig, maar de melancholie uit die tijd ook perfect kan laten herbeleven. Het afgelopen jaar brachten ze singles uit met als veelzeggende titels Teenage Pain en Then The Heartbreak. Het hadden songs van de soundtrack voor Pretty in Pink kunnen zijn geweest. Of het de afsluitende track is van een drieluik of dat deze saga uiteindelijk toch een happy-end gaat krijgen is (nog) niet bekend. In de nieuwste single Love, Again gaat de verteller er in ieder geval vanuit de liefde niet meer te zullen vinden.

Shy For Shore: van London naar Nederland

Het ontstaan van Shy For Shore is gelukkig minder dramatisch. De huidige synth-band bestaande uit Mari Nordén en Oz Page ontstond in 2011 tijdens een introductieprogramma in Camden’s Roundhouse. Het programma bestaat al geruime tijd en heeft als doel jongeren te stimuleren om hun eigen creativiteit in kunst en muziek te ontdekken en verder te ontplooien.

In eerste instantie ontwikkelde Shy for Shore zich door invloeden uit de lokale muziekscene in London tot een band met neiging tot post-rock met overstuurde riffs. Een verandering van lokatie had echter vergaande gevolgen voor de band. Nadat zij naar Nederland waren verhuisd transformeerden zij zich als een kameleon in hun nieuwe omgeving van post-rockers tot dreampop shoegazer’s.

Dreampop en Nederland

Omdat dreampop niet het meest voor de hand liggende genre in Nederland is vroeg ik de band hoe hun muzikale kameleon de dance en rock had weten te omzeilen.

Shy For Shore: “Goed punt. De elektronische muziek in Nederland is erg specifiek en het was dan ook niet ons streven iets soortgelijks te maken. Dat neemt niet weg dat we in Nederland wel geïnspireerd zijn geraakt. Niet zozeer door de rommelige club’s of de dance-festivals (alhoewel die wel leuk zijn) maar meer door de doe-het-zelf-cultuur in Nederland. Voor onze verhuizing naar Nederland hadden we het nooit aangedurfd onze eigen muziek zelf thuis te maken. Maar toen we hoorden dat iedereen die we ontmoeten het ook gewoon deed dachten we: ‘Fuck it’. Onze muziek is nu volledig gebaseerd op die thuisstudio-sound. We zijn er van overtuigd dat dit nooit had gekund als we in London of Oslo waren gebleven.”

De single Love, Again is vanaf 16 juni 2014 digitaal verkrijgbaar. De single wordt ook op vinyl uitgebracht. De vinyl-releasedatum is echter nog niet bekend.

Op 27 juni speelt Shy For Shore tijdens de officiële opening van Leg-Inc in Amsterdam.

///On one my highlights of the by:Larm festival ’14 in Oslo was the Norwegian/British synth-duo Shy For Shore. Melodic electropop not only inspired by the Eighties but also able to reproduce the melancholic feel of those days. Last year they released a couple of singles with the telling titles: Teenage Pain and Then The Heartbreak. They could have been included on the soundtrack of e.g. Pretty in Pink. If their latest single is gonna be the final chapter of a trilogy or the saga will continue and a happy-end is still possible is not clear (yet). However, listening to Love, Again the chances of finding love again are nil to nothing.

Shy For Shore: London to The Netherlands

The story of Shy For Shore is luckily less dramatic. Mari Nordén from Norway and the british Oz Page started Shy For Shore following a chance introduction at Camden’s Roundhouse. A program to stimulate youngsters to discover and explore their creativity in e.g. art and music. Inspired by the local sound of their environment in London Shy For Shore developed a post-rock sound with overdriven riffs. However after moving to The Netherlands the chameleonic power of the band, reflecting their new location,  transformed them into dreampop shoegazers.

Dreampop and The Netherlands

As the Dutch music-scene is best know for it’s dance-culture and rockbands I was quite surprised to read Shy For Shore’s change in musical course from post-rock to dreampop was in fact The Netherlands. Out of curiosity I asked the band and they were so kind to tell us about their chameleonic power.

Shy For Shore:  “it’s a good point, the expectations of electronic music in the Netherlands is specific and we certainly aren’t accommodating any conventions. But we have been inspired here. Not so much by the messy clubs or dance festivals (although they are fun) but by the DIY culture when it comes to living Dutch generally. Before we moved here we wouldn’t have dared to produce our own music at home, but everyone we met was doing it and we just thought ‘fuck it’. Now our sound is built on that home studio sound and we feel that could never have been if we had never left London or Oslo.”
