Poppy en catchy nummers met ruige randjes, een stem die afwisselend lief, breekbaar of krachtig klinkt en teksten die blijven boeien. Die vind je op ‘Towards the Sunset’ het nieuwe album van Echo Me (DK). Echo Me is het alter ego van Jesper Braae Madsen en begin maart presenteerde hij zijn cd voor het eerst in Studenthus in Aarhus.
‘Towards the sunset’ bestaat uit tien nummers die duidelijk het Echo Me-geluid hebben, maar ook afwisselend zijn: A Common Word is een energiek poprock-nummer, terwijl Out There een rustige ballad is en Out Of My Hands een aanstekelijk refrein.
De eerste indruk die je van de cd kunt krijgen is dat alle nummers over de liefde gaan, maar als je beter luistert, hoor je dat er meer achter de teksten zit. In het interview (binnenkort online!) dat ik met Jesper hield, blijkt dat het vooral gaat over de situatie waar hij nu in zit: willen leven van de muziek en de onzekerheid die daarbij komt kijken, maar nog een ‘day job’ ernaast hebben. Dit kun je horen in de eerste zin van de openingstrack: “Out of my hands, out of my head, towards the sunset I run” en in The Only One: “So I gotta go for the money I don’t know how much longer I can pay the price”.
Klinkt als?
Gedurende de meerdere luisterbeurten die ik de cd heb gegeven (tot ergernis van mijn Couchsurfing host 😉 ) kwam ik er steeds niet op aan welke muziek de nummers me deden denken. Tien dagen later weet ik het: Howie Day. Er zullen weinig zijn die dat iets zegt, maar in hetzelfde genre vindt je bijvoorbeeld ook Dylan, Young en Buckley.

‘Towards the Sunset’ is the beautiful debut of the Danish musician Jesper Braae Madsen, a.k.a. Echo Me. It contains 10 poppy and catchy songs, some with a rough edge to them.
The first impression you might get from the album, is that it is a collection of love songs, but that is not true at all. The main theme on the album is his current situation: wanting to play music full time and the lack of security that comes with it, but still needing a day job. The first sentence of the opening track is a good example of this: “Out of my hands, out of my head, towards the sunset I run”. Or in ‘The Only One’: “So I gotta go for the money I don’t know how much longer I can pay the price”.
Even though I don’t like comparing artists to one another, it is a good way to get an impression of the sound without hearing the music. And the songs of Echo Me reminded me of Howie Day, a not so famous (at least in The Netherlands there’s few people who know him) singer songwriter from the USA. Both are in the same genre as Dylan, Young en Buckley.
