What is your first port of call for tips about new Nordic music? (short pause whilst we read your thoughts and digest the responses…) Great to hear that it is our own Nordic Vibes website of course! But we do have some great Nordic-focused partners in crime out there, and we are happy to introduce a new one: Nordic Playlist.
At only a few weeks old, the Nordic Playlist online platform is already jam-packed with a hot-pot of toe-tingling tunes from all five Nordic nations: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden.
Nordic Playlist is a new website where every week during 2014 you will be able to discover a specially-curated playlist that has been handpicked by artists, tastemakers and a select number of curators from the Nordic Playlist team. Each list will feature two tracks from each country. Francine Gorman, the site’s own editor curated a playlist of 10 tracks in the first week, and on the site she commented about her choices, ‘I decided to create a list which includes both new and established artists – people that have influenced the last year for me, and people that i’m hoping will soundtrack the new year.’
Weekly selections
The website also has three other sections, in addition to the Nordic Playlist itself. The first is the Nordic Top 10 of sales/streaming charts in the individual countries.
There is also section called DJ Mixes. In this part, a bi-weekly hour-long mix by Nordic DJs will be provided, with each selected DJ then nominating which mix-master should create the next one.
Finally, we come to my favourite bit: the Up and Coming section. Here the team shines a spotlight on some newer Nordic artists. In the playlist for week 1, Vök and Broken Twin were featured – both of whom we are already fans of here at Nordic Vibes. To give a taste of the the Up and Coming selections so far, we’ve selected one track from each list that are new to Nordic Vibes. Watch this space, you might be hearing more from these artists!

The initiative is backed by NOMEX, the pan-Nordic music export body, and aims to promote greater collaboration between the individual Nordic territories. As well as promoting Nordic music internationally, Nordic Playlist also aims at showing the full dimensions of Nordic creation in a united and international scope. We are all for sharing the love for those soaring Nordic sounds – look forward to hearing what the future playlists reveal!
