Dråpe is a band from Oslo who have recently been making a whole bunch of noise – and colourful noise at that – at home in Norway. The five-piece has yet to venture much further afield, but it’s only a matter of time.
Creating a summery shoegaze sound, Dråpe (pronounced ‘Draw-pe’ in your best Norwegian), released the debut full-length album Canicular Days in April. The record is out on Riot Factory and it’s not the first time we’ve featured a band from this label (see also our luistertip for Angelica’s Elegy and interview with Highasakite).
Sunshiny and floaty the sounds may be, but the album’s opener ‘Blue Skies’ has a melancholic tone also. Who cares if it’s sunny outside if you’re ‘endlessly devoted, hopelessly alone.’ Indeed, but things are looking up. With those chugging guitars and pounding drums, the dual vocals of Ketil Myhre and Hanne Olsen Solem have an airiness about them. The label’s description of ‘weightless dreampop’ for the band fits perfectly – not least on ‘Memories’ with its synth-led swirling wall of sound.
Listen to Dråpe
The two aforementioned tracks are included here for your listening pleasure. The video for ‘Blue Skies’ was recorded a couple of weeks ago, when the band did a session for Norwegian magazine Spirit and At The Loft Records. More can be heard at the band’s Soundcloud page, and on Spotify and iTunes.
Dråpe will be wowing the crowds at Øyafestivalen in Oslo in August, having just this month played a successful show at Roskilde festival in Denmark. So, it turns out the band members have actually begun their first forays outside of Norway, with plans to play in Germany this year, and hopefully it won’t be long till they hit these shores.
