This Friday in Amsterdam sees the launch of a joint exhibition by two illustrators, one Danish – Simon Væth – and one Dutch – Max Grünfeld. The Very Rough Guide exhibition sets out to do exactly what it says on the tin: it is a very rough guide to the culture of these two countries, from each artist’s perspective, in illustrated form.
Both terrains have a fairly horizontal profile, which may or may not be the reason that both nations have a predilection for cycling. This is but one similarity between the two countries but there are also subtle differences in people and culture, as candidly captured and beautifully illustrated in this series of works by Væth and Grünfeld.
Presented by the contemporary art agency YOUR:OWN, this body of work shows nine different settings in which both artists have expressed their own perspectives. Comments Jeroen Smeets, the director of YOUR:OWN (who we at NV last met in December), ‘The Very Rough Guide is their view upon the Dutch and Danish culture. It goes without saying that these drawings are the absolute truth, without any exceptions.’
‘Simon Væth and Max Grünfeld are two artists who both work within the rich tradition of story telling, alike but still distinctively different. Simon works in the tradition of old folklore and the legends and myths of the Viking era, while Max works more in the field of contemporary comics and graphic novels.’
The exhibition
The exhibition runs from 7 to 21 June at Battalion‘s new gallery space in Westerpark, Amsterdam (opposite Ketelhuis) and will showcase the original drawings alongside a unique zine created for the exhibition, alongside additional work from the artists.
Nordic Vibes will be there to celebrate this cultural connection and we hope to see some of you there too. More information in the Facebook event listing here. The opening party is on Friday 7 June, 18:00–22:00.
