Today Young Dreams will play at Motel Mozaique. Twice! After the luistertip (listening tip) we wrote on their debut album ‘between places’ earlier this week, we got curious about the story of Matias Tellez and Rune Vanderskog, the two Guys behind the band. So we asked them a few questions!
Why did it take two and a half years to record the new album?
It takes time to write and go through every single bar and note and get the lyrics written and getting it all recorded and put together. And then it’s the mix, the mastering. Then you need the artwork to be right. And then you send it to print. It takes time. Like now we are almost in our second year in the writing/recording of the second album. And that won’t be out in a while.
Can you describe your songwriting process?
There are many different approaches. Most of the time it’s by sitting and playing the piano or guitar. Sometimes it comes right before falling a sleep or while walking down the street. If the idea still gives me a kick the day after and the following week I pursuit it and start sketching it up on the computer. If the idea still is interesting after that, I call Marius so he can lay down some drums and so I phone one by one and we meet up. There isn’t really one formula but this is one example of how it comes together.
What artists have inspired you?
Many, but thees are some: Judee Sill, Milton Nascimento, Edvard Grieg, Igor Stravinsky, Dave Fridmann, Bjørk, Phil Spector, Brian Wilson.
Anyone or anything else who/what has inspired you?
The surrealist movement that took place in Paris in the 1920’s.
What do you think of the comparison with The Beach Boys, Yeasayer, Arcade Fire and Fleet Foxes?
Beach Boys have gone on heavy rotation on the record player, the CD player, the MD player, the mp3 player and now on Deezer. Yeasayer and Arcade Fire I’ve never listened to. I heard the first Fleet Foxes album. They’ve got great harmonies! I like that song with the canon vocals.
What was your video for Fog of War inpired by?
You’ll have to ask Kristoffer Borgli about that!
(*adding to to do list*)
How are you prepapring for Motel Mozaique?
We just got back from the States, so we are warm and ready to play like heroes! Hopefully we get a soundcheck this time. Really looking forward playing and meeting new people and drink good beer!
