VETO uit Denemarken maakt apocalyptisch-romantische dance, zoals ze het zelf omschrijven, en ze spelen op 30 maart in Paradiso. Kijken jullie uit naar deze show?

Het is onze eerste echte show in Nederland! We hebben eerder al op Eurosonic gestaan, maar daarna zijn we nooit terug geweest. We weten dat we in ieder geval een Nederlandse fan hebben, dus we zullen die avond niet alleen zijn. Dat is geruststellend.

Wie of wat inspireert jullie bij het maken van muziek?

Naar veel verschillende soorten muziek luisteren inspireert natuurlijk. Ik denk ook dat we elkaar inspireren, ik denk dat dat is waar het in een band om draait. Nieuwe ideeën planten in de hoofden van andere bandleden, zien hoe ze groeien, ze oogsten en kijken of de zaden in je eigen hoofd kunnen groeien. Agrarische analogiën FTW!

Hoe schrijven jullie meestal jullie nummers?

We wonen in twee verschillende steden: Aarhus en Kopenhagen, dus het proces is wat ongebruikelijk denk ik. We hebben studio’s in beide steden en starten dan met het heen en weer sturen van ideeën. Zodra de nummers vorm beginnen te krijgen, spreken we af in Kopenhagen en beginnen we met opnemen. Troels schrijft de teksten pas later in het proces, ze hebben de gewoonte om een track ‘af’ te maken. We passen veel aan aan een nummer, dus de eerste versie van een nummer lijkt vaak niet op het uiteindelijke resultaat. We breken het nummer in stukken, maken nieuwe stukken en proberen het dan weer bij elkaar te zetten. Het is een beetje zoals LEGO.

Wat heeft VETO jullie tot dusver gebracht?

VETO heeft mij de mogelijkheid gegeven om over de wereld te reizen en muziek te maken met vier goede vrienden. De komende maanden reizen we door het grootste deel van Europa, Brazilie, Rusland enzovoort. Wat wil je nog meer?

Wat willen jullie bereiken voor 2018?

Hopelijk hebben we een hoger niveau bereikt van onze artistieke ambities. Dat is het enige concrete doel in ons vijfjarenplan!

Als Nordic Vibes zijnde ben ik natuurlijk erg nieuwsgierig of VETO vindt dat ze een typisch Nordic geluid hebben:

“Wij hebben niet echt een typisch Nordic geluid. Ik denk dat het heel moeilijk is om onze sound te definieren. Voor mij is dat althans het geval. Ik zie het als donker en soms filmisch, maar op andere momenten als levendig en losjes.

Wat is dan eigenlijk die typische Nordic sound?

Als ik luister naar Hatesphere, Oh Land, When Saints Go Machine en onszelf, vind ik het eerlijk gezegd moeilijk om te horen wat ons geluid specifiek Nordic maakt. Toch is het allemaal Nordic, op zijn eigen manier.

Wat of wie zijn jullie favoriete Scandinavische merk/film/ontwerper/.. die je wilt aanraden?

Een van mijn persoonlijke interesses is Deens interieuerdesign. Vooral die uit de jaren 1930-1990. Kijk om te beginnen eens naar het werk van Poul Henningsen, Hans Jørgen Wegner, Arne Vodder en Finn Juhl! Verder lees ik nu de autobiografische romans van de Noorse schrijver Karl Ove Knausgaards. Hij heeft zes boeken geschrveen en ik ben bij nummer vier. Het is gewoon geweldig!

Are you looking forward to the gig in The Netherlands?

Yes, I think it’s our first real gig in Holland! We played at Eurosonic once, which was great, but we never managed to come back after that. We know we have at least one Dutch fan, so we one be alone on the night. That’s also comforting.

What or who inspires you in the process of music making?

Listening to all kinds of different music inspires of cause. I think we also inspire each other a lot. I think that’s what being in band is all about. Planting new ideas in the heads of your bandmates. See how they grow, harvest and see if the seeds can grow in your own head. Agricultural analogies FTW!

How do you generally write your songs?

We actually live in two different cities (Aarhus and Copenhagen), so the process is pretty unusual (I think). We have a studio in both cities, so we start out by sending early ideas back and forth. When the song starts shaping, we meet up in copenhagen, and starts recording. Troels starts working on the lyrics rather late in the process, and the have a way of giving the track it’s final shape.
We often do a lot of revisions of the songs, so the first try is almost never the final one. We just break up the track in parts, we make some new one, and try to assemble it again. It’s a bit like making your own LEGO.

What has VETO brought you thusfar?

I think VETO has brought me the opportunity to travel around the world and play music with 4 very good friends. The next couple of months are taking us around most of Europe, Brazil, Russia and so on. What more can you ask for?

What do you want to accomplish before 2018?

Hopefully, we have achieved a higher level of freedom to pursue our artistic ambitions. That is the only sure thing on our five-year-plan, really.

As Nordic Vibes, I am curious what the band thinks what is a typical Nordic sound and whether they think they have that sound themselves:

Do you think you have a typically Nordic sound?

Not really. I think it’s pretty hard do define our “sound”. For me it is, anyway. I’d think of it as dark and cinematic at times, but also as vivid and loose at some points.

What do you think is the typical Nordic Sound?

When i listen to Hatesphere, Oh Land, When Saints Go Machine and ourselves, I honestly find it hard to hear what makes us especially nordic. But still, it’s all nordic in it’s own way.

What or who is your favourite Nordic brand/movie/designer/.. that you’d like to recommend?

One of my personal interests is danish furniture design. Mostly from the 1930-1990’s. Check out guys like Poul Henningsen, Hans Jørgen Wegner, Arne Vodder and Finn Juhl. Just for starters.
I’m currently reading the Norwegian writer Karl Ove Knausgaards 6 autobiographical novels. I’m at number 4. It’s simply amazing.
