Nelson Can was one of our favourite bands at Eurosonic 2013 and this week the three Danish girls are coming back to The Netherlands to play some gigs. One of them is at the Nordic Delight Festival! I asked the band some questions about both festivals, their favourite Nordic design and 2018.
We loved you at Eurosonic. How do you look back at the festival?
Thank you!! We had such a great time there! We were very busy during Eurosonic and experienced so many things, that we sometimes had to remind ourselves to breathe at the same time. It’s wonderful thinking about at all the great things that happened. We met so many awesome people, and got to play our music in front of so many new faces. Yay! We want to go back!
You will play at Nordic Delight festival this Saturday, how are you preparing for it?
When we prepare for shows we like to jam over our own music, add small details and change the songs – just a little bit – so that every live show is a different and unique experience for both us and the audiences.
What or who is your favourite Nordic brand/movie/designer/.. that you’d like to recommend to the readers?
Where to start? Most Danes are very proud of the many great Danish designers and architects such as Jørn Utzon, Arne Jacobsen, Henrik Vibskov, Marlene Birger etc. but We see Nordic design, and art, and books everyday, so there are actually many things we don’t even notice, because it’s just a part of our cultural heritage and everyday life.
Something very Nordic that we all really like though is salty licorice YUM!
What is the most important thing you have experienced as a band?
Getting booked for Roskilde Festival 2012 was definitely a great stepping stone for us. It changed everything. After that we supported the Black Keys, made music for Volkswagens TV commercials in China and got recommended by David Fricke from Rolling Stone Magazine.
What is the most funny thing you have experienced as a band?
One of the most important things for us as a band, is to have fun with everything we do. If we are not having fun as a band, it’s very difficult to be passionate about it. It’s always fun being on tour. We were in Switzerland in February, where we met so many awesome people and we all got ridiculously drunk and just lived life. We are young and we are in the middle of our lives’ biggest adventure, and we enjoy every second of it.
If you have to re-write your biography in 2018, what do you hope to write down?
We hope to write that we have signed a record deal with Third Man Records and have made a couple of records, maybe even produced by Jack White – and that when they talk about ”Nelson Can in the old days” it will be ”back when all-female bands were rare”. We hope that by then it is completely normal for women to play music and that it’s no longer a big deal for anyone to talk about. Hopefully we’re also nasty rich old ladies by then.
