One of my favourite design shops/galleries in Amsterdam is Battalion. In this store, many desirably cool items can be found. If you head there for some winter inspiration, be sure to venture upstairs where numerous lovely illustrated books and magazines are on sale, Wrap being one of them. This beautiful publication celebrates the very best in illustration, design and creative culture. And what’s more, each issue includes five double-sided sheets of wrapping paper, created by some of the most talented illustrators of the moment. To top it all off, the current issue (issue 6), has a Nordic theme!
In all, it features ten artists all hailing from, or currently living in, a Nordic country, and they were all asked to portray what a Nordic winter means to them. The result is a glistening delight – full of snowy scenes, icy lakes and magical animals. The cover design is by Bjørn Rune Lie (NO) and the issue also features Petra Börner (SE), Klaus Haapaniemi (FI), Hanna Konola (FI), Miss Lotion (DK), Lotta Nieminen (FI), Janine Rewell (FI), Riikka Sormunen (FI) , Antti Uotila (FI) and Peter-John de Villiers (a New Yorker working in Oslo).
Other designers/artists/bakers featured in this ‘Nordic Lights’ issue to include:
- Finnish design brand Marimekko
- Nordic Bakery chain
- Finnish artist Klaus Haapaniemi
- Icelandic wool company Vik Prjónsdóttir (my favourite; that is the brand’s ‘scarf factory’ illustration on the right and you might already be familiar with the Beardhat?).
So, if that is enough Nordicness to whet your appetite, no doubt you want to get your hands on a copy of this issue of Wrap. This can be done by (a) heading along to Battalion quick sharp or (b) heading to the magazine’s website and buying a copy online.
