Olafur Eliasson (DK) illuminates Amsterdam’s new Eye

The new home of the Eye Film Institute in Amsterdam opens its doors to the public today. You might have noticed the somewhat futuristic building which sits majestically on the north side of the river IJ. In all its pristine white glory, it entices visitors across the river (by hopping on one of the free ferries just behind Central Station) to discover what delights it holds inside.

The imposing cantilevered building is the brainchild of Austrian firm Delugan Meissl Associated Architects and the interior is furnished with works by Dutch creatives – such as Gispen, Design Academy in Eindhoven and Project Buro Looman – as well as Danish artist Olafur Eliasson.

On entering the vast atrium – with angular lines at every turn, linking the interior with the dramatic architecture of the outside of the building – don’t forget to look up! Here you will see light modules dotted around, designed by Eliasson (in collaboration with Zumbotel).

These many-faceted light fittings – known as the Starbrick – hang suspended high up on the ceiling and reflect the geometric-ness of the space. The Starbrick is in fact the result of experiments between space and geometry and, as mentioned on the product’s website:  ‘It poses questions that are central to both contemporary art and society: How does light define space? How does it influence the way we experience the world?’

Which certainly seems apt seeing as though the architecture of the Eye has at its very essence a distinct spatial concept. And, now that we’ve been wowed by the building and its interior,  no doubt we will soon be wowed by the films which will be shown here  – more on that coming soon. We will be sure to share news of any upcoming Nordic films to be screened at the Eye which catch the Nordic Vibe team’s ‘eye’!
